What is the approved document part G building regulations?

The approved part G building regulations are sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency. Providing guidance on minimum requirements for new dwellings or renovated dwellings. Under building regulations and building control it is mandatory to comply with Part G approved document.

What are Part G water efficiency calculations?

Part g water calculations are a requirement for all new builds, extensions & conversions, you must prove that the dwelling doesn't use more than 125 litres of water per person per day.

These water calculations take into account internal water use:

  • Total number and specification of taps
  • Total number and specification of toilets
  • Total number and specification of baths
  • Total number and specification of showers
  • Specification of dishwasher & washing machine.

Sanitary ware water calculations part g

Approved documents part G specifies the maximum consumption for sanitary ware, appliances and washing facilities:

  • WC - 6/4 litres dual flush or 4.5 litres single flush
  • Shower - 10 l/min
  • Bath - 185 litres
  • Basin taps - 6 l/min
  • Sink taps - 8 l/min
  • Dishwasher - 1.25l/placesetting
  • Washing machine - 8.17 l/kilogram

When do I require a Part G Water Calculation?

Definitely before any building work starts on site, initial notice submitted to your local authority will then require you to produce a water calculation for your proposed dwelling.

You should also require a test on completion, only if there has been any specification changes from the original design.

What is requirement G1

The approved document deals with the following requirement from Part G, schedule 1.

Requirement G1 deals with cold water supply, and states the following:

  • Wholesome water supply to any place where drinking water is drawn off
  • Wholesome water to any wash basin, bidet, fixed bath or shower in a bathroom.
  • Wholesome water to any sink provided in any food preparation areas.

What is requirement G2

Approved document G2 deals with water efficiency, aiming to ensure that fittings and fixed appliances that use water efficiently in an attempt to prevent unnecessary consumption of water.

G2 states the following:

  • The estimated consumption of wholesome water of a new dwelling should be no more than 125 litres per person, per day.
  • Wholesome water calculation, the person carrying out the work must give the local authority specifies the potential consumption of wholesome water per person per day in relation to the completed dwelling.
